There are so many brake servicing shops that will advertise a complete brake job for $99.00. Then, after you get in there and your car is up on the rack, you are informed that you need new rotors for an additional $45 per wheel. That is just one of the little side hustles that certain shops will pull on unsuspecting customers.

Another thing to watch out for is if you have one or two brake pads that have more wear than the others. Shady mechanics may tell you that your hydraulic cylinders have begun to fail and need replaced. Shops that use cheap brakes are not really trying to scam you, they are just trying to make more money in the end. However, cheap brakes do not always work properly on newer cars and could cause excessive noise and brake dust accumulation on your rims.

Truth is, you should know what exactly goes into servicing of a vehicles brakes. By doing this, you can arm yourself with knowledge that shady mechanics are banking on you not having, as well as the fact that if you are mechanically inclined, you could actually do the job yourself. Although you should realize that brake systems are very important in the safe driving of your vehicle. If you are not 100% positive you can perform the task, by all means, take your car to a professional for brake servicing.

The first thing involved in brake service will be the replacement of the pads. Once the wheel has been taken off, and if no rotors are warped or damaged from too long without new pads, then the brake pads will be replaced first. If the rotors are damaged, they can be resurfaced, rather than thrown away and replaced with new ones. If they are warped, on the other hand, then you need new ones, and that is no scam.

When the pads are replaced, all the lines checked, wheel cylinders and/or brake drums inspected for excessive wear, they will then need to bleed the brake lines. Bleeding the brakes is always involved in brake service. Make sure your brake lines have been bled properly. Brake lines are bled by taking a small wrench and turning the valve at the end of the brake line on the brake cylinder. While someone pumps the brakes to build pressure in the lines, another person will turn the valve until no air, only fluid comes out. This should be done on all wheels that have had brake service performed on them.

Remember, when your brakes begin making noise, such as squealing or grinding, or if your brake pedal feels spongy and/or goes to the floor, you should take your car to a shop and have your brakes serviced as soon as possible. The longer you allow bad brakes to remain on your vehicle, the better chance of complete brake failure, ruined rotors or hubs and the possibility of an accident. Brakes will tell you when they need attention, if you will just take the time to listen to them.

Generally all elements of the brake system of your motor vehicle are made to keep working for an extended period of time, however it is often suggested to check your brakes frequently and replace brake pads, rotors, line and fluid if necessary. To appreciate the importance of the braking system why don’t we quickly review how it works.

Whenever you press the brake pedal in your car, it activates the main brake cylinder. The piston inside the cylinder generates the pressure within the brake lines which are fastened to each individual wheel. Then the brake fluid under pressure engages each individual wheel cylinder, which then presses brake pads to the rotors. This enables each of the wheels stop their rotation which successively causes the entire car or truck to cease going. However, after a certain interval of usage there arrives a moment when the brake pads end up dangerously thin, which you can identify by screeching or squealing sounds while braking. If not addressed, the pad might harm brake rotor which will require its replacement since even if you put in completely new pads, they will most likely need substitute once again following a several months of driving a vehicle. In general the replacement of the brake rotors quite often is not necessary, you may get away with just simply resurfacing all of them. Actually, you should do the sanding and resurfacing of ones brake pads every now and then regardless. This is going to keep their surface nice and equal and in turn each of your current pads and rotors will last much longer. You can typically tell that the rotor is warped by pulsating brake pedal.

Here are another symptoms that may indicate that your car needs its brakes repaired:

low brake pedal

spongy or soft brake pedal

pedal travelling too far when you apply the brakes or sinks to the floor

scraping metal-to-metal noises when braking

car drags or pulls to one side when braking

If you notice any of the above, you should consider paying a visit to your nearest mechanic as soon as possible.
